Is there an artist you love? I mean really love, as in you’ll buy anything they do before you have any idea what it is? A lot of people probably do, and for them, Apple has a new feature on iTunes called “iTunes Pass.”

Is there an artist you love? I mean really love, as in you’ll buy anything they do before you have any idea what it is? A lot of people probably do, and for them, Apple has a new feature on iTunes called “iTunes Pass.”

While the idea behind this new service seems a bit vague, as I understand it, you buy this pass for a certain artist or group and you’ll automatically receive anything new that they release into the iTunes store during a set period of time. You might think of it like a season pass for a television show on iTunes, except this is for music. Apparently, it can include albums, special tracks, remixes, videos and more.

Unfortunately, right now if you want to try out iTunes Pass you have one option: Depeche Mode. The band’s newest album Sounds of the Universe is being offered as part of the first iTunes pass. For $18.99, you get access to the first single right now as well as another track that regular pre-orderers won’t get. And when the album comes out, you’ll obviously get that too.

As I mentioned, you’ll also get any bonus material and things such as music videos that come out before the pass expires on June 16, 2009 (it’s not clear why they picked that date). All content obtained through this pass is iTunes Plus, meaning it has no digital rights management (DRM) protection on it, and is in the highest quality that iTunes offers.

This page on iTunes has a bit more information about iTunes Pass. Apparently, there are no refunds, returns or cancellations of iTunes Passes. Like season passes for iTunes television shows, iTunes Passes will email you when new content is available and automatically download it if you choose. And the page contains this rather odd statement:

The purchase price of iTunes Pass will not exceed the fair market value of individual items offered as part of iTunes Pass.

Okay, so iTunes won’t rip you off if you sign up for this pass. Good to know, I guess.

I suppose this is an interesting idea for super-fans of select artists, but for most people, I think the a la carte option of regular iTunes will be just fine.

Apple Announces Safari 4—The World’s Fastest & Most Innovative Browser
New Nitro Engine Runs JavaScript More Than Four Times Faster

CUPERTINO, California—February 24, 2009—Apple® today announced the public beta of Safari® 4, the world’s fastest and most innovative web browser for Mac® and Windows PCs. The Nitro engine in Safari 4 runs JavaScript 4.2 times faster than Safari 3.* Innovative new features that make browsing more intuitive and enjoyable include Top Sites, for a stunning visual preview of frequently visited pages; Full History Search, to search through titles, web addresses and the complete text of recently viewed pages; Cover Flow®, to easily flip through web history or bookmarks; and Tabs on Top, to make tabbed browsing easier and more intuitive.

“Apple created Safari to bring innovation, speed and open standards back into web browsers, and today it takes another big step forward,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Safari 4 is the fastest and most efficient browser for Mac and Windows, with great integration of HTML 5 and CSS 3 web standards that enables the next generation of interactive web applications.”

Safari 4 is built on the world’s most advanced browser technologies including the new Nitro JavaScript engine that executes JavaScript up to 30 times faster than IE 7 and more than three times faster than Firefox 3. Safari quickly loads HTML web pages three times faster than IE 7 and almost three times faster than Firefox 3.*

Apple is leading the industry in defining and implementing innovative web standards such as HTML 5 and CSS 3 for an entirely new class of web applications that feature rich media, graphics and fonts. Safari 4 includes HTML 5 support for offline technologies so web-based applications can store information locally without an Internet connection, and is the first browser to support advanced CSS Effects that enable highly polished web graphics using reflections, gradients and precision masks. Safari 4 is the first browser to pass the Web Standards Project’s Acid3 test, which examines how well a browser adheres to CSS, JavaScript, XML and SVG web standards that are specifically designed for dynamic web applications.

Safari for Mac, Windows, iPhone™ and iPod® touch are all built on Apple’s WebKit, the world’s fastest and most advanced browser engine. Apple developed WebKit as an open source project to create the world’s best browser engine and to advance the adoption of modern web standards. Most recently, WebKit led the introduction of HTML 5 and CSS 3 web standards and is known for its fast, modern code-base. The industry’s newest browsers are based on WebKit including Google Chrome, the Google Android browser, the Nokia Series 60 browser and Palm webOS.

* Innovative new features in Safari 4 include:
* Top Sites, a display of frequently visited pages in a stunning wall of previews so users can jump to their favorite sites with a single click;
* Full History Search, where users search through titles, web addresses and the complete text of recently viewed pages to easily return to sites they’ve seen before;
* Cover Flow, to make searching web history or bookmarks as fun and easy as paging through album art in iTunes®;
* Tabs on Top, for better tabbed browsing with easy drag-and-drop tab management tools and an intuitive button for opening new ones;
* Smart Address Field, that automatically completes web addresses by displaying an easy-to-read list of suggestions from Top Sites, bookmarks and browsing history;
* Smart Search Field, where users fine-tune searches with recommendations from Google Suggest or a list of recent searches;
* Full Page Zoom, for a closer look at any website without degrading the quality of the site’s layout and text;
* built-in web developer tools to debug, tweak and optimize a website for peak performance and compatibility; and
* a new Windows-native look in Safari for Windows, that uses standard Windows font rendering and native title bar, borders and toolbars so Safari fits the look and feel of other Windows XP and Windows Vista applications.

Pricing & Availability
Safari 4 is a public beta for both Mac OS® X and Windows and is available immediately as a free download at www.apple.com/safari.

Safari 4 for Mac OS X requires Mac OS X Leopard® version 10.5.6 and Security Update 2009-001 or Mac OS X Tiger® version 10.4.11, a minimum 256MB of memory, and is designed to run on any Intel-based Mac or a Mac with a PowerPC G5, G4 or G3 processor and built-in FireWire®. Safari 4 for Windows requires Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista, a minimum 256MB of memory and a system with at least a 500 MHz Intel Pentium processor. Full system requirements and more information on Safari 4 can be found at www.apple.com/safari.

*Performance will vary based on system configuration, network connection and other factors. All testing conducted on an iMac® 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo system running Windows Vista, with 2GB of RAM. JavaScript benchmark based on the SunSpider JavaScript Performance test. HTML benchmark based on VeriTest’s iBench Version 5.0 using default settings.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications.
As Yahoo chief executive Carol Bartz readies a company-wide reorganization, insiders are playing close attention to how she’ll fill one critical hole.

Gerald Horkan, Yahoo’s senior vice president of corporate strategy, left the company a few weeks ago, according to people familiar with the matter, and hasn’t been replaced.

Mr. Horkan, who could not be reached for comment, oversaw M&A and corporate strategy at Yahoo and spent much of last year toiling over acquisition talks with Microsoft and other suitors. He joined Yahoo in 2005 after serving in Booz & Co.’s communications, media and technology practice.

Life for Mr. Horkan and his team had quieted down recently. There’s no offer from Microsoft on the table and Ms. Bartz is taking pause to study Yahoo’s businesses.

Still, as investors continue to root for the software and Internet giants to reunite in some sort of deal, Ms. Bartz won’t be able to wait too long to fill Mr. Horkan’s shoes.

Who she picks could set the tone for her strategy ahead. An outsider is likely to be a strong sign she’s eager to toss out Yahoo’s old deal-making playbook, say employees. An insider may suggest she’s fairly content with the current course.

The team at Ext created an Adobe AIR application called Pixel Bender Explorer that demonstrates how to apply compelling animations and other effects to your JavaScript-based AIR applications. The effects are accomplished using Flash Player 10′s new Pixel Bender technology, the same technology behind many filters and effects in Adobe After Effects software. Aaron Conran from Ext discusses on the blog post how he was able to to access these effects from JavaScript and integrate this functionality into the Ext JavaScript framework.

The application allows you to load a sample video and image and then apply filters effects in real-time. It’s impressive to see the responsiveness when you load a video, apply an effect and adjust the supported properties (angle, direction, center point, etc.). Try loading the sample video, selecting “RadialCaleidoscope” and then slowing adjusting the “angle” property.

Many exciting new functions and features are being thought up for CSS3: text-shadow, box-sizing, opacity, multiple backgrounds, border-radius, border-image, etc…

CSS3 leads to greater flexibility and makes it much easier to recreate previously complex effects. Not all current browsers support CSS3, but it is however possible to create equivalent effects and serve it with the power of jQuery.

This article presents 5 CSS3 techniques which can dramatically get you a stunning user interfaces and how to achieve almost the same effects using jQuery for browsers that are not compatible yet with CSS3 new features.

1. Border Radius: Create rounded corners

W3C has offered a very interesting option for borders in CSS3, of which one is border-radius. This CSS3 styling rule allows rounded corners to be set. Both Mozila/Firefox and Safari 3 have implemented this function, which allows you to create round corners on box-items.

Use the followig css code to replicate the above example.

view plaincopy to clipboardprint?

#rounded-box {

-moz-border-radius-topleft: 15px;

-moz-border-radius-topright: 0px;

-moz-border-radius-bottomright: 15px;

-moz-border-radius-bottomleft: 0px;

-webkit-border-top-left-radius: 15px;

-webkit-border-top-rightright-radius: 0px;

-webkit-border-bottom-left-radius: 0px;

-webkit-border-bottom-rightright-radius: 15px;

}

#rounded-box {
-moz-border-radius-topleft: 15px;
-moz-border-radius-topright: 0px;
-moz-border-radius-bottomright: 15px;
-moz-border-radius-bottomleft: 0px;
-webkit-border-top-left-radius: 15px;
-webkit-border-top-right-radius: 0px;
-webkit-border-bottom-left-radius: 0px;
-webkit-border-bottom-right-radius: 15px;
}

Below you will find jQuery solutions and plugins that will allow you to create rounded corners without using images.

How To » jQuery Canvas Rounded Corners

jQuery Plug-in to make rounded corners on your DOM objects using <canvas> element. Tested in IE7 and FF3

You can change the following Options:

radio – (int) radius size of corners

inColor – (color) inside color of element

outColor – (color) outside color of corners

borderSize – (int) border width

borderColor – (color) color of borders

How To » jQuery Corners

This jQuery plugin will easily create beautifully rounded corners. No images or obtrusive markup necessary.

2. Border Image

Another exciting new border feature of CSS3 is the property border-image. Border-image, allows an image to be used as the border of an element. Each side of the image corresponds to a side of the HTML object.

Currently “Border Image” is only implemented in the upcoming Firefox3.1 and recent releases of Safari and Chrome. Below you will find a tricky jQuery solution that will allow you to have this feature work in: Firefox 2.*, Firefox 3, Firefox 3.1, Safari 3.*, Chrome 1.0, Opera 9.*, Opera 10
and IE7.

How To » jquery.borderImage.js

jquery.borderImage is a cross-browser, partial implementation of CSS3’s border-image property. This plugin can create the same effect as border-image by creating nine slices from the image one by one, and then tile them in the background of our element.

3. Multiple Backgrounds

CSS3 allows for multiple background images on one element, this is a real time saver. To do this, you can separate backgrounds by commas, like this

view plaincopy to clipboardprint?

#multiple-background-box {

background: url(top-bg.gif) top left no-repeat,

url(bottombottom-bg.gif) bottombottom left no-repeat,

url(middle-bg.gif) left repeat-y;

padding: 20px;

}

#multiple-background-box {
background: url(top-bg.gif) top left no-repeat,
url(bottom-bg.gif) bottom left no-repeat,
url(middle-bg.gif) left repeat-y;
padding: 20px;
}

Since this features is not supported by most browsers yet, and you want multiple/layered backgrounds for a div tag, you would nest div tags inside of each other with the CSS to give it the background you wanted. That’s a lot of code, and doesn’t seem too effecient. The solution is to use jQuery with the Background Layers plugin.

How To » CSS Multiple Backgrounds / Background Layering with jQuery

The Background Layers plugin reduces the amount XHTML you need to write simply by adding a few lines of JavaScript, making your code much less cumbersome. The concept is similar to the use of layers in Photoshop, one background image on top of another.

The code above demonstrate laying backgrounds than to use a few sprites from the classic video game, Super Mario Bros 3.

4. Box Shadow and Text Shadow

The main goal of this property is to give designers and css coders a nice way to display a shadow behind your text. The property syntax should look like this:

view plaincopy to clipboardprint?

h3 { text-shadow: 2px 2px 2px #333; }

A very useful article i found at Kretschmann’s website, explaing different usage of this property and including different example for using it in a nice way.

Again, this property is not supported by Firefox and IE, so we have to find ourself another way of doing it using jQuery.

How To » Drop Shadow

This plugin creates soft drop shadows behind page elements, including text and transparent images. It accepts options for the horizontal and vertical offsets, amount of blur, opacity, and color. Please look at the demo page for examples.

How To » Text-shadow in Internet Explorer

Text-shadow in Internet Explorer adds text-shadow effects to Internet Explorer. You can easily turn it on by calling textShadow();.

5.Transparency & Opacity

The most widely implemented feature of CSS3 up till now is opacity. ‘opacity’ sets the value to how opaque an elements. An element with opacity value 1.0 will be fully opaque (visible) while an element with opacity value 0.0 will be the complete opposite, invisible. Any value inbetween will determine how opaque (or transparent) the element is. Check out this interesting post by Zen Elements explaining how to use it.

The above opacity example is set in another layer containing a completely random, never seen before background and each layer uses the following CSS:

view plaincopy to clipboardprint?

It allows you to define a gradient fill and have an element filled with a gradient. You can set the direction of the gradient (right-left or up-down) and the opacity of the gradient easily.
